Wheel Barrows
Like most gardening tools, wheelbarrows or wheel barrows are no exception in
that different designs and material that can be obtained. Most have a single
wheel at the front and two handles at the rear. The rear of the barrow itself
generally contains two rests. The use of a single wheel gives the wheelbarrow
greater manouvarability in tight spaces. The wheel maybe solid, pneumatic, or a
ball shape in the James Dyson design. The frame is more often than not made from
steel tubing, either one piece or occasinally two. To this frame is bolted the
pan that is more commonly deeper at the wheel end.
If you know about levers, pivot points and fulcrums, then you will understand
the reason why heavy items to be carried are placed as close to the wheel as
possible. It also explains why the pan is deeper at the front, since if filled
level then most weight would be over the wheel.
Using a wheelbarrow involves a lifting operation and incorrect use can lead to
injury, especially those involving the back. A few safety points that may reduce
these injuries:-
-
Take a leaf out of sporting personal and do warm up excercises prior to using
the wheelbarrow
-
Do not be tempted to fill to maximum capacity.
-
Check that the load is stable and centrally located
-
Keep your back straight and bend your knees with feet flat on the floor.
-
Hold the barrow handles with arms extended and test the weight by gently
lifting using your arms. Remove some load if it feels too heavy, or if inclines
are anticipated.
-
Once you are happy with the weight, lift using your leg muscles until you are
stood upright.
-
Gently rock the barrow using your arms to make sure the load is stable and
evenenly distributed.
To avoid making ruts in the lawn or when going over soft ground, use planks!!
