Lawn Edging Spades
Lawn edging spades, half moon spade, or lawn edging knife, they are basically
all the same thing but it can be confusing when trying to find information
regarding products for purchase on the web. The blade is not curved as in a
border spade but is flat and the cutting edge is semi circular or half moon
shape, many blades are bent at the top to give a greater area of contact with
your boot. You can purchase blades made from different metals but carbon steel
and stainless steel are the best to look for. The shaft can be made from
traditional ash, plastic, aluminium etc. The handle is generally either "T" or
"D" shaped.
The edgers of lawns can look jaggered over time and this is where the half moon
edging spade comes in. Use a plank placed on the lawn to act as a guide and cut
to this. You may have to remove the plank and follow the line to get a deeper
cut. One neighbour of mine used to cut her lawn edge more than once a year and
it was not long before there was nothing left of the lawn. She should have used
lawn edging shears to maintain the neatness of the straight edge.
Lawn edgers have other uses on the lawn too, take a damaged edge for instance. A
rectangular section of lawn is cut and then the turf lifted, turned round and
placed back with the new edge level with undamaged lawn edge. The damaged area
which is filled and seeded. Hollows and bumps which develop on lawns can be
corrected by using the half moon spade to create a cross so that the turf can be
lifted and either soil added or removed.
