The Dutch Hoe
The Dutch hoe or Scuffle hoe unlike many other traditional hoes is pushed rather
than pulled. Sometimes the dutch hoe is referred to as a push hoe. Typical use
is on well cultivated land is that of chopping off the tops of weeds. Having
loose soil on the surface can reduce moisture loss from the soil below and the
dutch hoe is perfect for the purpose of creating a thin layer of loose soil to
act as a dry mulch. Like most garden tools there are many different materials
used. The head could be carbon or stainless steel. The handle maybe wood, metal
plastic or fibreglass.
Do you need to have a dutch hoe? I would not be without mine for removing weeds
from the garden and breaking up the soil surface.
