Question and Answers

Why Divide the Clumps?

  1. When the clumps get older the centre tends to be inferior to that of the outer edges.

  2. The clump may have outgrown the space allocated for it.

  3. You may wish to have more of the same plant somewhere else in the garden.

  4. You can give the clumps away to some of your friends and later receive other free plants for your garden.

When is the best time of year?

Generally in spring or autumn in good weather when the soil is moist but look the plant up to find the best time.

How do I divide the clump?

Before starting this operation a little preparation is called for.

  1. Have two forks handy in case you cannot pull the clump apart..

  2. A stout polythene sheet to protect the lawn from loose dirt if you are dividing it on here.

  3. Compost sufficient to mix with the old soil.

  4. Fertiliser or feed to give the plants a good start. Quantity depends upon manufacturers recommendation.

  5. Watering can filled with water.

  6. Carry out a regime of limbering up exercises to prevent injuries or aches and pains.

  7. Wearing protective gear, stout shoes gloves etc.

Dividing step by step

  1. I like to start about 7cm away from the plant and loosen the soil all the way round the clump using a fork.

  2. Once all the soil is loose I then try to carefully prise out the clump. Try prising a little bit all the way round rather than risk breaking your fork or your back.

  3. With a little patience the clump should break free.
