Mulching is the action of applying a mulch onto the soil. It is derived from an
English word for soft.

The main purpose of mulching is to stop water from evaporating from the soil. Depending
upon the material used mulching may also add structure to the soil, or have a cosmetic
effect, deter some garden pests whilst encouraging friendlier creatures to flourish,
reduce annual weeds, forms a barrier that reduces frost from penetrating the soil,
plant food can also be released, worm activity is greatly improved.
