Lavandula

The family of Lavendula (Lavendar) is a flowering member of the mint family Lamiaceae. Lavendar in ancient times was believed to have special powers attributed to it, namely: Love, Chastity, Peace, Longevity, Protection, Sleep, Purification and Happiness.
Lavendar and Love have been beleived to go together and thus love letters were sprinkled with lavendar essense in order to increase the potency. Ladies of the night would also wear Lavander fragrance in the belief that the aroma could attract more males.

In more modern times Lavander as been said to:

  1. promote calmness.
  2. ease tension and depression.
  3. relax and balance the mind and body.
  4. sooth tired muscles.

Common Name: Lavendar

  • English Lavendar - Lavendula augustifolia ( formely L. officinalis)
  • Spanish Lavendar - Lavandula stoechas

(English Lavendar) This was until recently called L.offinalis. Generally fully hardy within the Uk
Lavandula stoechas
( French or Spanish Lavendar.)
'Stoechas' is the ancient Greek name for a group of  islands off the Marseilles coast, on which this species is abundant
