Family Lamiaceae

Lamiaceae is the mint family consisting of around 180 genera.

The original name for this family was Labiatae (from the Latin word Labia meaning lips) since the flowers typically have petals fused into an upper lip and a lower lip.

Within this family the common traits are:

  • The stems are square in cross section
  • The flowers are all bilaterally symmetrical with four or five united petals five united sepals.
  • The leaves are descussate (pairs of leaves at right angles to one another)
